Second graders respond to Louis Armstrong's performance of the song "What a Wonderful World" by creating their own movement piece. They performed their dance at a Friday Gathering about "Hopes & Dreams"

Music is a vital part of a student's whole education at Linwood Monroe Arts Plus. In music classes, students learn the foundations of music including rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, tone color, texture and form. Students then take that foundational knowledge and use it to perform high quality music, create original improvisations, arrangements and compositions, and respond to music from a variety of cultural and historical traditions.

In addition to a student's core music time at Linwood Monroe, our school offers students in 2nd – 5th grades the opportunity to participate in choir. Currently, 280 students perform in our two choirs at Linwood Monroe Arts Plus.

Students in 5th through 8th grades may choose to participate in band.  EDL Band is held two days a week after school, and is open to 5th and 6th grade beginners. 6th grade students have the additional option of being in 6th Grade Band during the school day.  7th and 8th grade students may participate in Concert Band, the advanced ensemble, which meets every day throughout the school year.

MRS. GINA ENGELKING is band director and general music teacher to our 6-8 grade students, and is in her very first year at LMAP on the Monroe campus. This is her 12th year with SPPS, and her 14th year teaching music. Mrs. Engelking was influenced to begin

a career in teaching by both a band teacher in high school, and one in college. She is married, has a beautiful daughter, and two adorable cats! She grew up in South Dakota, and studied at the U of M, Minneapolis, and at the University of St. Thomas. She loves being outdoors, swimming, camping, reading with her daughter, and spending time with friends and family.

Students in 5th through 8th grades may choose to participate in band. For 5th and 6th grade students, there is an after school band program one day a week.  6th grade students have the option to be in Music class, where they learn to play a band instrument, sing, play xylophones, and learn about the elements of music.  7th and 8th grade students may participate in either Concert Band or in General Music where students perform, create original improvisations, arrangements and compositions, and learn about music from a variety of cultural and historical traditions.  Students in the General Music class sing and play in xylophone, recorder and percussion ensembles.

Self discipline is something Mrs. Engelking encourages her students to learn. When it comes to this her motto is, "Make excellence a daily habit!" You may reach Mrs. Engelking by calling 651-293-8690, or by emailing her at gina.engelking@spps.org.

vocal music teacher to students in grades K-3 at our Linwood Campus.  She also directs a second/third and fourth/fifth grade choir at LMAP.  Mrs. Kroetsch has been at LMAP for 16 years, her entire teaching career.  Mrs. Kroetsch has been married to her husband for eight years and they have two children:  A daughter who is five and a son who is one.  Kim says, "We look forward to becoming LMAP parents soon when daughter starts school at Linwood!"

Mrs. Kroetsch loves directing our two choirs!  She is constantly inspired by the high-quality musicianship our students demonstrate when they sing together.  She also loves working with the many professional artists who come into our school community to work in residence with students and teachers.

Mrs. Kroetsch had the great fortune to serve on the committee of arts educators at the MN Department of Education developing the most recent edition of the Minnesota State Arts Standards.  The arts standards encompass music, dance, theater, visual art and media arts.  They provide direction in helping students learn not only about the Foundations of each art form, but also the three Large Artistic Processes:  Create, Perform & Respond.  The K-5 music curriculum that

Check out the Saint Paul Public School's Kindergarten- Grade 5 Music Scope and Sequence at the bottom of this page!  Mrs. Kroetsch and Mrs. Engelking helped to create this important document which guides music instruction across our school district.  It outlines exactly what students learn in music at each grade level throughout their elementary music education.  Check it out!
